| Variety of Maps The Viridans packages include a range of maps of Victoria on which to superimpose the distribution of species or conduct area searches. The examples to the right are based on a search for all sites where the Barking Owl has been found (red dots are the site records). The maps in the packages come in a number of series. The basic series incorporates about twenty-five 1:1,000,000 maps of all of Victoria with various themes. These themes include topography, rainfall, temperature, roads, rivers, towns, geology, soils, vegetation, landsat, bio-geographic regions, FMAs, RFAs, CMAs, LGAs, public land, parks etc. For many of these map themes the polygons from which they are constructed can be used as searching tools for regional flora and fauna assessment (e.g. LGAs, FMAs, Bio-geographic regions). Maps of Differing Scale Some themes are available in two or three resolutions. For example, the Land Use series can be viewed at 1:1,000,000 scale for statewide plots, on 1:500,000 tiles for regional plots or 1:100,000 tiles for local plots. Similarly the Landsat series can be used at 1:2,000,000 statewide or 1:100,000 tiles. Each of the maps can be used for plots or polygon searches. Each can be sent to a printer in a pre-formatted layout. All are vector-based so that the best output is ensured for the printer. All can be exported as Windows Metafiles for use within desktop publishers (but not other GIS packages) (see most examples on the Tutorials page) |
