| Rapid Searches The Viridans databases are designed to maximise the efficiency of two processes. Searching for all the locations for a particular species. Searching for all the species in a specified area. Individual Species Plots A typical search for all records for a single species will take less than 20 seconds regardless of the size of the database. (based on a 200 mhz computer with a 24 spin CD-Rom and a species found in less than 2000 sites) (see The example to the right shows the geographic range of three species of Banksia, each plotted in a different colour on a simple outline map of Victoria. This process could be repeated for any map and any of the plotted sites can be accessed, on screen, by clicking on the circle which represents a record location (see Area Searches To search an area for all records it contains the user may select from a wide range of specified polygons including LGAs, Bioregions, Parks, CMAs etc. The user may also sketch the area directly on any map (as in the example to the right). The user has the choice of searching areas which are circular, rectangular, linear (with a buffer) or polygonal (with or without a buffer). Or, with a little bit of technical knowledge, a digitised area may be imported from another GIS package. Once all the records have been found the package will subset the data to allow the user to determine all species in the area (see |
