Vegetation

Vegetation of Greater Melbourne
Information on the existing native vegetation of the Greater Melbourne area is provided in several ways.  Some of it via an EVC lookup program where the user may scroll through a list of EVCs and view descriptions, regional maps and photographs. The user may also access information via a detailed, interactive map which can also be used as background for species plots and searches.

Vegetation Descriptions
Each of the 60 Ecological Vegetation Classes (EVCs) that have been identified from the region is described with reference to its appearance,  the area it occupies, its habitat, altitude range, climate, soils and conservation status. There is also a list of the commonly occurring plant species (both native and non-native) arranged in order of their life forms (see example).

Vegetation Photographs
Each EVC has been photographed and in most cases there are several photographs from across the EVC range (see examples).

Individual EVC Maps
Each map is an outline of the coastline of Greater Melbourne with the area occupied by the EVC plotted in red (see examples).

Interactive Vegetation Maps
These are a series of 1:100,000 map tiles with all EVCs mapped together, along with roads, rivers, lakes, towns, built-up areas etc.  You may use these maps to plot the distribution of any species as well as for searching for all species in an area (see examples).
