These are step-by-step examples of
some of the tasks that Wild Plants of Victoria and
Wild Animals of Victoria are designed to perform.
Tutorial 1

Investigate Acacia brachybotrya (Grey Mulga).
• Find the plant in Wild Plants of Victoria.
• Print a copy of a photograph and written description of the species.
• Plot the distribution of the species on a map of Victoria showing the most recent date for each grid.
• Display the distribution on a map of Victorian rainfall and another of Victorian topography.
The products of this task should be:
• A printed page, with a written description and photograph of Acacia brachybotrya
• A printed page, with the distribution of Acacia brachybotrya plotted as ten-minute grids on a 1:1,000,000 map of Victoria.

Investigate the fauna of the area around Lake Corangamite
• Find Lake Corangamite on a map of Victoria in Wild Animals of Victoria.
• Select a number of grids which cover the lake and surrounding areas.
• Summarise a list of all animal species found in the search area.
• Save the list of species in a Rich Text File (RTF) suitable for loading into a word processor.
The products of this task should be:
• A formatted Rich Text File with all species in the search area showing the common name, scientific name, conservation status, family and most recent record for each.

Investigate the distribution and habitat of the rare plant
Actinotus forsythii (Ridge Flannel Flower)
• Find Actinotus forsythii in Wild Plants of Victoria.
• Print a picture and descriptive text of the species.
• Plot the distribution of the species on a map of Victoria
• Use the topographic map, bioregion map and satellite image to get an idea of the type of environment in which the species is found.
• Search the location in which the species is found to determine the full range of species that occur in that area.
The products of this task should be:
• A printed page showing a photograph and full description of the species
• A list of all species that occur in the same location as Actinotus
forsythii.

Investigate the distribution and conservation status of the rare Australian Bustard
(Ardeotus australis)
• Find Australian Bustard in Wild Animals of Victoria.
• Print a picture and descriptive text of the species.
• Plot the distribution of the species on a map of Victoria and note how many records are recent compared with those that are 50 years old or more
• Print the distribution map
• Use the red-coloured grids (the most recent records for the species) on the map, and satellite images, to get an idea of the degree of disturbance of the environment in which the species is currently found.
The products of this task should be:
• A printed page showing a photograph and full description of the species
Tutorial 5

You are in north-western Victoria, near Boundary Bend, and you have found a small tree with white, five-petalled flowers and long leaves. Use the identification aids in Wild Plants of Victoria to find out what it might be.
• Find Boundary Bend on a map of Victoria in Wild Plants of Victoria (in the north-west on the Murray).
• Select the grids which cover the surrounding area.
• Generate a list of all species in the search area
• Run the Filters part of the software and select the characters, Large Shrub to Small Tree, Flowers with Five Petals and Flower Colour White or Cream
• View the results and decide which plant best fits the plant you have seen.

• A printed page showing a photograph and full description of the Geijera parviflora (Wilga)
