Spanish Dancer
Spanish Dancer -
Hexabranchus imperialis

Ss

No prizes for guessing how this animal gets its name.  But exactly what the animal is may be less clear to the average observer.

The Spanish Dancer is a member of a group of marine molluscs called sea-slugs which are distantly related to land slugs but much larger and infinitely more spectacular in appearance.  Most enthusiasts prefer to call the group by their scientific name of nudibranch.

The Spanish Dancer is one of the larger nudibranchs and it swims by means of rhythmic swirls of its body to give the appearance of the white-frilled, red dress which are flourished by flamenco dancers of Spain.
