| Most
types of ants, wasps and bees have some sort of stinger in their
tails (abdomen) with a sac of venom at its base. The purpose
of this venom is often to paralyse prey that will later be fed to
their larvae (pronounced larvee).
Bullants are colonial insects which
are famous for their courage in standing up to intruders many
times their own size. They are also famous for their
extremely painful stings which come from well-developed venom
sacs. In addition to the stings they can deliver a powerful
bite from their huge, spiny jaws. It is perhaps surprising
then, to learn that such a well-armoured creature actually feeds
on nectar and pollen, and uses its weapons for defence and
catching prey for the larvae in the nest.
