Weevil
Diamond Weevil -
Chrysolophus spectabilis

Ww

Weevils have a long, curved snout with small, strong jaws at the end.  They are adapted to boring into plant material.  Most weevils are considered to be pests as they can attack leaves, roots and seeds of many agricultural plants. Perhaps the best known of these is the Boll Weevil which is a voracious consumer of cotton in American plantations.

The Diamond Weevil is one of the larger species and feeds almost exclusively on wattles (Acacia).  The larvae feed on the roots and the adults feed on the leaves. It has the distinction of being one of the first species of insect to be described from Australia after specimens were collected by the biologist Sir Joseph Banks when he arrived in Australia in 1770.
