| Cup
moths are rather dull brown little moths which emerge from a
small, cup-shaped cocoon. Although they are very common few
people recognise them.
The caterpillars, however, are
another story. They are are brightly coloured little
bulldozer-like animals with conical lumps at both ends of their
bodies from which dense tufts of stinging spines can be eXserted
(pushed out) when danger threatens. Most Australians have
seen them at one stage, particularly as they are often found in
large numbers on trees, sometimes causing severe damage.
