As you can see, the Large Duck-orchid really does look like a duck in flight complete with duck's head, wings and body. The 'head' of the duck is in fact a sensitive structure which swings downwards when an insect visits the flower and pushes it against a cluster of pollen in the 'body'. In this way the orchid ensures that pollen is transferred from one plant to another.

These curious and lovely ground orchids are often quite common in heathlands on sandy soils. Sometimes, particularly after fires or other disturbances, they may come up in very large numbers during spring and summer
