Heath
Common Heath - Epacris impressa

Hh

The Common Heath is a small, prickly-leafed shrub that grows to about a metre tall and it is the floral emblem of Victoria. Its flowers may be pale pink, dark pink, white and sometimes almost red, and although it flowers mostly in spring there are always some plants in flower at almost any time of the year.

The tubular flower has nectar at the bottom and pollen near its mouth. Honeyeaters will put their beaks deep into the flower so that they can drink the nectar and in the process will touch their foreheads onto the pollen. The microscopic pollen grains of the Common Heath have narrow fins on them which are designed to slide between the edges of feathers so that they can be carried away by the bird.
