The Murray Lily
(or Darling Lily in New South Wales) is a showy herb which grows in flood plains around (as its names
suggest) the Murray and Darling Rivers in inland Australia. The white, star-shaped flowers may be up to 15 cm across and
is one of the largest of all Australian plants.
The Murray and Darling Rivers are the longest and largest rivers in Australia. They begin in wet, high country of northern and eastern Australia and then flow through some of the driest country in the world before emptying into the sea. Every few years, after good rains, the rivers flood their banks and spread out over very large areas leaving fertile soils and water for plant growth. It is these areas in which the Murray Lily grows.
