Passion-flower
Red Passion-flower - Passiflora cinnabarina

Pp

The Red Passion-flower is a vine that lives in the wet rainforests of south-eastern Australia and is closely related to the cultivated Passionfruit, a native of Brazilian rainforests.

The name for all passion-flowers is taken from parts of the plant that Christians said symbolised the Passion or trials of Jesus. The three-pointed leaf was said to symbolise the spear that killed Jesus, the five petals symbolise the five wounds he received, the tendrils that help the plant climb symbolise the rope that bound him, the three styles symbolise the three nails that held him to the cross, the erect fringe around the flower base symbolised the crown of thorns placed on his head, and finally, the thick column in the centre of the flower symbolised the cross itself.
