The Ivy-leaf Violet is one of the most widespread and abundant herbs in woodlands and forests of south-eastern Australia. It has also become a very popular ground-cover plant in Australian gardens and there are many forms with different sized flowers and leaves.
The smaller-leafed forms tend to grow in more open, sunny places while the larger-leafed forms (which also have larger flowers) are more common in shaded forests. This range of shapes and sizes has led botanists to suspect that the Ivy-leaf Violet is not really a single species at all but a number of species, each with a particular environment that it prefers.
