Yam
Yam-daisy - Microseris lanceolata

Yy

The Yam-daisy is a Dandelion-like plant that was once very common across the grasslands and woodlands of south-eastern Australia. The roots of older plants have a large swollen tuber, rather like that of a sweet-potato or yam, and the before white settlers arrived in Australia these were amongst the most important sources of food for the Aborigines who called it Murnong.

Today most of the great grasslands of Australia have been taken over by farms to grow wheat or graze sheep and cattle. As a result the Yam-daisy, although still widespread, is nowhere near as common as it used to be and its roots are no longer the most important source of food for anyone.
