The Cockatiel is, as its name suggests, a small cockatoo. It is widespread across Australia in most areas where the rainfall is relatively low.
Cockatiels don't build a nest in the normal way, instead, like all other cockatoos and most parrots, they find a hollow in the branch or trunk of an old tree and line it with grass and other plant material. As the eggs are going to be laid safely inside a dark hollow they don't need to be camouflaged and therefore Cockatiel eggs are white.
Cockatiels, like their relatives the Budgerigar, have become popular cage and aviary birds and this has sometimes meant that captive birds are accidentally released into places that they don't normally live. |
