Gannet
Australasian Gannet - Morus serrator

Gg

Until you see a gannet up close it is difficult to tell how large a bird it really is. It's a sea bird and in photographs it looks like it might be a bit bigger than a sea gull. In fact, Australasian Gannets are nearly a metre from tail to beak and have a wingspan of up to 1.7 metres, that means they are longer and have a greater wingspan than most birds of prey.

Gannets are also ferocious hunters. They have large, dagger-like beaks and fly 5-20 metres above the sea before plunging like a spear into the waves after fish. A colony of gannets may have several thousand birds in it and when these big birds go fishing they can do far more damage to a school of fish than a dozen sharks.
