Not all Australian kingfishers live and hunt near water, several species nest in tree hollows and hunt lizards and other small land animals. The Kookaburra is the biggest of these kingfishers and hunts far away from rivers, feeding on animals as large as snakes which it kills by dropping, many times, from high in the air.
The Sacred Kingfisher, is a much smaller bird, and although it is
often found near rivers, it is equally at home deep in forests and
woodlands where it hunts small reptiles, frogs, insects, spiders
and other invertebrates.
Its nest is usually a hollow in a
tree or stump but it sometimes makes a burrow in a river
bank. Inside the nest the female will lay several small,
round, white eggs.
