Ningauis (pronounced Nin-gow-ee) are tiny mammals, with bristly fur, that live in the Australian dry country. They are very secretive and come out only at night
to hunt (like almost all Australian small mammals). The Aboriginals of Australia have probably known about them for centuries but it wasn't until 1975 that white people discovered them and the
Southern Ningaui was only discovered in 1983.
Although the Ningaui is about the size of a small mouse, when looked at closely it is quite different. To begin with, its head is rather flat on top and it has a long, narrow snout. Inside its mouth it has many, small, pointed teeth whereas a mouse has large front, chisel-like teeth for gnawing. The pointed teeth of the Ningaui are ideal for catching and eating its prey which is often grasshoppers, crickets, spiders or any other invertebrate it can catch.
