Owls are amongst the best night-time hunters. They have large eyes that can see very well in the dark, huge talons on their feet to catch the small animals they feed on and special, soft wing feathers that allow them to fly very quietly so that their prey cannot hear them coming.
The Powerful Owl is the largest of the Australian owls and lives
in forests where it hunts possums and gliders (it seems to be
particularly fond of Ringtail Possums). Like nearly all
other owls, Powerful Owls nest in tree hollows, often high above
the forest floor. As these are such big birds they need
large hollows and for that they need big, old trees. As as a
consequence Powerful Owls need very mature forests, and large
areas of them, to survive.
