Flying FoX
Grey-headed Flying-fox - Pteropus poliocephalus

Xx

There are no animals in Australia whose common name begins with an X so we have chosen to use one where the letter X is at least present in the name.

The Grey-headed Flying-fox is a large bat with a face that does look very like that of a fox. It doesn't look like many of the smaller bats (to begin with it has much larger eyes) and it doesn't navigate using high-pitched sounds (echolocation). Instead it uses its very sensitive eyes to find its way around at night (and at dawn and dusk when a lot of flying is done) and it feeds on fruit, whereas the small bats feed on insects.

There has been some concern in recent years that colonies of these noisy animals harbour diseases that can affect humans and so there has been pressure to limit their numbers.
