These little birds are amongst the most successful species of inland Australia. They are found all over the mainland in the lower rainfall areas but they still have a habit of seeking out waterholes and rivers from which to drink.
Like most finches, Zebra Finches feed on seeds, and grass seeds are their primary food. Their broad, strong beaks easily remove the husks from the seeds to get at the kernels inside. When they build a nest grasses are used again but this time as building material which is usually woven around some slender twigs.
Zebra finches mate for life and may live for many years in the wild. They are also very popular aviary birds so that there are always records near major cities where they have escaped from captivity.
