Viridans Image Library |
|||
| Every photograph in the
Viridans image library is of a plant
or animal that has been identified to species or subspecies level by a
professional botanist or zoologist. This means that you may rely
on the images as a reference source for professional, public information
or educational publications.
The current library consists of over 6500 images made up of nearly 14000 photographs of about 4300 species of vascular plants (flowering plants, conifers and ferns), mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and butterflies. Most of these species are native, or are naturalized introductions, to south-eastern Australia, although some are from other regions in the country. Each image is referenced by the scientific name and common name of the subject. As there are regular changes to the scientific nomenclature, Viridans has referenced each image by its currently accepted name as well as a number of its previous names. The same approach has been taken for the common names where different states may have their own common for a single species. For example, the Stumpy-tailed Lizard (Victorian common name), the Sleepy Lizard (South Australian) and the Shingleback Lizard (NSW) all refer to the same species. In addition, the current scientific name for this species is Tiliqua rugosa (making it a close relative to the blue-tongued lizards) whereas a few years ago it was referred to as Trachydosaurus rugosus. In the Viridans image library you may search for this animal under all five names as well as Lizard; Stumpy-tailed. Viridans botanical and zoological databases hold information on the distribution, abundance and conservation status of most of the species in the image library (particularly for Victorian localities) so we can advise clients on useful and appropriate lists of species for regional field guides, brochures or posters. |
