Finding Images The images on this web site are all of identified plant or animal species. This means that you may search for any species of plant or animal you are interested in. You may do this by selecting the group of organisms you are interesting from the first menu (Plants, Vertebrates, Butterflies) and then typing in the scientific name if you know it (e.g. Pterostylis nutans), or the common name, (e.g. Nodding Greenhood) or just the general common name (e.g. Greenhood). In each case the search program will provide you with a list of all species with the search text you enter as part of the name. You may select from the list that is on the screen and an image will then be displayed along with the name of the photographer and an image code number. If there is more than one image for the species these will be listed as Image 1, Image 2, Image 3 etc above the displayed picture. Click on any of these and the corresponding photograph (or collection of photographs) will be shown. Each image is referenced by the scientific name and common name of the subject. As there are regular changes to the scientific nomenclature, Viridans has referenced each image by its currently accepted name as well as a number of its previous names. The same approach has been taken for the common names where different states may have their own common for a single species. For example, the Stumpy-tailed Lizard (Victorian common name), the Sleepy Lizard (South Australian) and the Shingle-back Lizard (NSW) all refer to the same species. In addition, the current scientific name for this species is Tiliqua rugosa (making it a close relative to the blue-tongued lizards) whereas a few years ago it was referred to as Trachydosaurus rugosus. In the Viridans image library you may search for this animal under all five names as well as Lizard; Stumpy-tailed.
