These are step-by-step examples of some of the tasks that Wild Plants of Victoria and Wild Animals of Victoria are designed to perform.  Each tutorial has Web and Desktop example.

Tutorial 1 [PDF 1.9 Mb]

Investigate Acacia brachybotrya (Grey Mulga).

  • Find the plant in Wild Plants of Victoria.
  • View full-sized photographs of the species
  • Print, or save as a PDF document, a combined photograph, written description and distribution map of the species.
  • Plot the distribution of the species on a map of Victoria showing the most recent date for each grid.
  • Display the same distribution on a map of Victorian Bioregions and print or save this as a PDF document.

The products of this task should be:

  • A printed page or saved PDF document,with a photograph, written description and distribution map of Acacia brachybotrya
  • A printed page or saved PDF document with the distribution of Acacia brachybotrya plotted as ten-minute grids on a 1:1,000,000 map of Victoria.

Investigate the fauna of the area around Lake Corangamite

  • Find Lake Corangamite on a map of Victoria in Wild Animals of Victoria.
  • Sketch a search area which covers the lake and surrounding areas. 
  • Summarise a list of all animal species found in the search area. 
  • Save the list of species in a PDF document.

The products of this task should be

  • A PDF document with all species in the search area showing the common name, scientific name, conservation status, family and most recent record for each.

Tutorial 2 [PDF 1.6 Mb]

Investigate the fauna of the area around Lake Corangamite

  • Find Lake Corangamite on a map of Victoria in Wild Animals of Victoria.
  • Sketch a search area which covers the lake and surrounding areas. 
  • Summarise a list of all animal species found in the search area. 
  • Save the list of species in a Rich Text File (RTF) suitable for loading into a word processor.

The products of this task should be

  • A formatted Rich Text File with all species in the search area showing the common name, scientific name, conservation status, family and most recent record for each.

You are in north-western Victoria, near Boundary Bend, and you have found a small tree with white, five-petalled flowers and narrow, grey-green leaves,  Use the identification aids in Wild Plants of Victoria to find out what it is.

  • Find Boundary Bend on a map of Victoria in Wild Plants of Victoria (in the north-west on the Murray, just east of Robinvale).
  • Select the grids which cover the town and surrounding area. 
  • Generate a list of all plant species found in the search area. 
  • Use the filters to select the characters, Large Shrub or Small Tree, Flowers with Five Petals, and Flowers White or Cream.
  • View the results and examine each plant photograph and description to determine which is the best fit.

The products of this task should be

  • Run Wild Animals of Victoria
  • Find the Grampians National Park
  • Select all the grid cells that cover the park
  • Generate a list of all species from the park
  • Refine that list to include only reptiles that are classified as rare or threatened
  • Print or export the list as a PDF document

The products of this task should be

  • A PDF document of all rare or threatened reptiles in the Grampains

Tutorial 4 [PDF 1.8 Mb]

Generate a list of all rare or threatened reptile species in the Grampians National Park.

  • Run Wild Animals of Victoria
  • Find the Grampians National Park
  • Select all the grid cells that cover the park
  • Generate a list of all species from the park
  • Refine that list to include only reptiles that are classified as rare or threatened
  • Print or export the list as a Rich Text Format (RTF) document

The products of this task should be

  • A RTF document of all rare or threatened reptiles in the Grampains
